Sources checked ยท Chinese Government Scholarship

The notice for the Chinese Trade Unions Silk Road Scholarship, published by China Scholarship Council (Campus China), lists seven application documents (items 1 to 7). It sets out the application procedure in seven numbered steps (Step 1 to Step 7). Below, the numbering and wording follow the notice.

Application documents

The notice's "II. List of Application Documents" has seven items:

  1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (in Chinese or English).
  2. Notarized highest diploma. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.
  3. Academic transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.
  4. A Study Plan or Research Proposal (written in Chinese or English). This should be a minimum of 500 words.
  5. Valid documents of your legal guardians in China (only required for applicants under the age of 18).
  6. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (written in English; only required for applicants planning to stay in China for more than 6 months; can be downloaded from http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina or http://www.campuschina.org). The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete forms, forms without the signature of the attending physician, forms without the official stamp of the hospital, or forms without a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered invalid. Plan the physical examination schedule carefully, as the result is valid for only 6 months.
  7. A resume or CV including the educational background and working experience after high school (upload to "Other Supporting Documents" in the CGSIS, the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System).

The note under the list says: "Applicants must provide authentic and valid documents according to the requests and upload clear scanned copies onto CGSIS. Failure to fulfill the requirements will negatively influence the scholarship results."

Application procedures

The notice's "III. Application Procedures" prints the following steps.

Step 1. Prepare the application documents according to the "List of Application Documents".

Step 2. Visit "CSC Study in China" website and click "Scholarship Application for Students" at http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina or http://www.campuschina.org.

Step 3. Choose "Type A" for "Program Category" and type "00009" as the "Agency Number" for the CTUSRS program. Once the correct "Program Category" and "Agency Number" are entered, the name of the authority is displayed automatically on the page. The notice says that if these are not filled in correctly, you will not be able to continue your online application or your application will not be accepted. These two entries are printed in this notice for this programme.

Step 4. Fill in the Online Application Form and upload supporting documents accurately and in their entirety, following the steps listed on the left of the page. For the section "Language Proficiency and Study Plan", the notice says to follow these instructions:

Field Entry as printed in the notice
Apply As "General Scholar"
Preferred Teaching Language "Chinese"
Discipline Applying For "Literature"
Major Applying For "Chinese Language"
Preferences of Institute I "Beijing Language and Culture University"
Preferences of Institute II and III "None" (the notice gives the reason: "as the program will be undertaken in one university only")
Duration of Major Study "1st September of current year to 15th July of the following year"

The university named in the Institute I entry appears there because the notice instructs it. The notice does not present it as a recommendation.

Step 5. Check each part of your application carefully before submission. Click "Submit" to submit your application. The notice says: "The submitted documents will be the only reference for the applied universities to confirm the admission."

Step 6. Make changes by clicking "Withdraw and Edit" the Application at the top of the page. Submit it again by clicking "Submit" after finishing all the changes. The notice says that otherwise "the retrieved application will become invalid and your new application will not be received either." It also says: "Once the application is under formal review by the CSC and universities, the applicant shall not be able to withdraw and edit it."

Step 7. Download the completed Application Form by clicking "Print the Application Form".

The notice's "NOTE" adds three points. Use Firefox or Internet Explorer (11.0), because menu selection functions may not work in other browsers. Only Chinese and English are accepted for the online application. Enter accurate, detailed and valid information in the "Current Contact Information" section of CGSIS, so that admission documents can be mailed to you accurately and on time.

For the deadline, check the current notice from China Scholarship Council (Campus China).

Eligibility

The notice's "Eligibility" section lists five criteria, a to e. Applicants should be citizens of a country other than the PRC, and preferably from one of the countries along the "Belt and Road".
